Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has highlighted the insufficient capacity of hospitals to handle the growing influx of accident cases at a conference held today at Janata Bhawan. The conference brought together District Commissioners, officials from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), and other stakeholders. The objective was to assess the current scenario and formulate effective strategies for mitigating road accidents. According to data presented at the conference, Assam has witnessed a total of 3,191 accidents between January and May 2023, indicating a 10.07 per cent increase compared to the 2,899 accidents recorded during the same period in 2022. Additionally, the data revealed that there were 1,415 fatalities in the reported accidents during the first five months of 2023, reflecting a 14.46 per cent increase from the 1,233 fatalities reported in the corresponding period of 2022.CM Sarma drew attention to the lack of sufficient hospital beds to accommodate the injured individuals involved in these road accidents. With each district having a maximum of only 10 Intensive Care Units (ICUs), Sarma raised concerns about the inability to cater to patients in the event of multiple fatalities. He described this as the most significant threat faced by the state at present. Sarma further emphasised the urgent need for solutions to reduce the number of accidents. He stressed the importance of installing reflectors and proper signage to indicate road hazards, as well as ensuring the appropriate construction of barricades.
