During a conference held at Janata Bhawan today, it was revealed that the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) has neglected the mandated reduction of black spots in Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the conference, which brought together District Commissioners, NHIDCL officials, and other stakeholders. The discussion primarily focused on the concerning prevalence of accident-prone black spots throughout the state. NHIDCL authorities claimed that their officials regularly visited District Commissioners (DCs) and District Transport Officers (DTOs) every 10-15 days to address the issue. To verify this claim, Chief Minister Sarma personally sought input from several DCs. Pulak Mahanta, DC of Jorhat, confirmed that NHIDCL officials had indeed started visiting the district regularly this month to discuss black spots. However, Jay Shivani, Additional DC of Biswanath, contradicted the claim, stating that NHIDCL officials only visited when specifically called for meetings and did not make regular visits to discuss black spots. Similarly, Rohan Kumar Jha, DC of Cachar, and Khanindra Choudhury, DC of Goalpara, admitted that occasional visits were made for other purposes but not in accordance with the mandated discussions on black spots.Expressing dissatisfaction, Chief Minister Sarma urged NHIDCL authorities to take the issue of black spots more seriously and ensure that officials visit the offices of DCs, Superintendents of Police, District Transport, and local police stations in the districts affected by black spots. Currently, Assam has a total of 132 black spots spread across 31 districts.
