Panchayat Office On Verge Of Inundation As Ai River Erodes Riverbed

The office of Kacharipeti Panchayat, located under the Srijangram subdivision of the Bongaigaon district, is teetering on the brink of submersion as the Ai River relentlessly erodes its riverbed. The panchayat territory itself is also under imminent threat due to the prolonged erosion, raising concerns among the local residents. Despite the alarming situation, it is alleged that the authorities, including people's representatives, District Collectors, and the Water Resources Departments, have failed to take any preventive measures to address the erosion issue, as per media reports. Adding to the gravity of the situation, the panchayat authorities have resorted to breaking down the panchayat office today. The estimated value of the office and its contents is around ₹17 lakh. They have reportedly salvaged items that were stored within the office premises. Local residents assert that unless immediate action is taken by the district administration or the Department of Water Resources to combat the Ai River's erosion, a significant portion of the panchayat, along with the office, will inevitably be swallowed by the riverbed.
