The residents of Guwahati are irked and irritated by the delay of the authorities to complete the water supply project in Guwahati. Most Guwahatians to date were dependent on underground water but recently it has been observed that people are not being able to get water from their wells, bore wells and other underground water extraction mechanisms. A resident of Jyotikuchi, Mrinal Das taking to GPlus said, “Last year I spent around ₹4 lakhs to install a tube bore well in my house and till last month we were getting enough water but suddenly the water has dried up and we are not getting water,” adding that even the Guwahati Jal Board (GJB) has not completed the water supply project in the Jyotikuchi area side. GJB has gradually started supplying water in some areas of the city. Wherever the water supply project has been completed, the GJB is providing water but because of incidents of pipe leakages, water supply at times gets suspended for a few days. The housing and urban development minister Ashok Singhal recently claimed that the supply of water is not suspended for four to five days in any area but if required for a day or so. A resident of Hengrabari said that the minister’s claim is false as the water supply has been suspended in his area for the last one month. He is irked at the water supply scenario. Similarly, there are suspension of water supply allegations from many areas. On November 2, GJB tweeted, “We would like to inform our esteemed consumers that water supply will be interrupted on 2.11.23 due to sudden leakage observed at transmission line in Chandmari. Inconvenience is regretted. Regards GMDW&SB.” Again on November 3, GJB tweeted, “We would like to inform our esteemed consumers that water supply will be interrupted on 3.11.23 due to repairing works taken up yesternight at Chandmari as notified earlier in spite of our endeavour to complete the same yesterday itself. Inconvenience is regretted. Regards GMDW&SB.” Similar messages keep coming from GJB. Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) also supplies water to many households in Guwajhati and many times it is not regular for various technical issues. Maximum Guwahati residents depend on purchasing water every day and sometimes even the private water tankers do not provide water on time due to scarcity. The GJB water supply project work has been ongoing since 2011 and the completion time keeps getting postponed. Residents have to wait and watch what excuse is given this time when the completion deadline is not met
