The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India recently concluded a two-day camp sitting in Guwahati, aimed at addressing pending cases of human rights violations across eight northeastern states. Presided over by Chairperson Justice Arun Mishra, the camp involved hearing 56 cases and spreading awareness among state officials, parastatal organisations, and NGOs. The camp, held on November 16 and 17, focused on diverse areas of human rights violations, engaging the concerned stakeholders to promote and protect human rights. The commission deliberated on 56 cases, covering various issues such as arbitrary land division, alleged rape cases, fatalities and injuries due to negligence in railway projects, poor conditions in district hospitals, and instances of violence. Notably, the NHRC intervention led to the disbursement or pending process of compensation amounting to ₹355.5 lakhs in these cases. In addition to hearing cases, the NHRC conducted meetings with Chief Secretaries/DGPs of the northeastern states, urging them to submit action taken reports on NHRC advisories related to mental health, police encounters, bonded labour, right to food and safety, child sexual abuse material (CSAM), truck drivers' rights, ocular trauma, suicide prevention in judicial and police custody, and manual scavenging. The commission stressed the importance of timely submission of reports, especially in pending cases, and emphasised the need for state governments to provide infrastructure and fill vacant posts for the smooth functioning of State Human Rights Commissions (SHRCs). A meeting with NGOs and representatives of Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) highlighted the critical role they play in addressing human rights issues in the region.
