The road transport ministry has issued guidelines for the use of "inert soil" from legacy municipal waste in the construction of National Highways. This enables cities and towns to dispose of legacy wastes and free up urban land. The guidelines specify that future highway construction projects must use inert soil in the embankments, whenever it is available. Inert soil is clean and not contaminated with harmful substances. Successful pilot projects have already been carried out in Delhi-NCR and Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, demonstrating the effectiveness of using inert material in construction.
