The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a notice stating that it has received approximately 500 suggestions and objections in response to its draft proposal on the delimitation of Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies in the state of Assam. The commission had previously invited these suggestions and objections through an order and notification on June 20. ECI is actively reviewing all the received suggestions and objections. In order to provide an opportunity for the concerned individuals to present their views directly, the commission has decided to conduct public sittings across the state. The purpose of these sittings is to hear the suggestions and objections submitted in response to the draft proposal, which was published in the Central and State Gazettes, as well as in vernacular newspapers on June 20. The first sitting will be held on July 19. The districts to be covered are Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Udalguri, Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao. The second sitting will take place on July 20 and will cover the districts of Dhubri, Goalpara, South Salmara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Cachar, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Nagaon, Sonitpur, Morigaon and Darrang. There will also be an interaction with national and state-recognised political parties on the same day. Finally, the third sitting will take place on July 21 and will cover the districts of Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sibsagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Golaghat, and Majuli. The venue for the sittings in the city would be Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in Panjabari. The Election Commission invites all individuals who have submitted suggestions and objections and wish to present their concerns before the commission to attend the public sittings as per the aforementioned programme.
