The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) have issued a special weather bulletin for Assam, warning against probable impacts of floods and suggesting actions to be taken by the public. IMD warns that visibility may become poor due to intense spell of rainfall leading to traffic congestion. Temporary disruption of traffic due to water logging in roads and uprooting of trees can be expected leading to increased travel time. Moreover, uprooting of trees may cause damages to thepower sector. Possibility of damages to vulnerable structures is also to be expected due to heavy to very heavy rain. Partial damages to kutcha houses and huts may occur due to uprooting of trees. They also warn about possibilities of flash floods due to intense spells of rainfall. Water logging / flooding in many low lying areas can be expected to happen. Landslides and mud slides are also very likely, the bulletin said. Heavy rainfall may damage the standing crops and vegetables in the maturity stage. Dispersion of soil from the field and subsequent seed displacement and poor germination of seeds may also occur. Moreover, lightning may also occur with the potential risk of injuring people and animals. IMD have advised people to follow any traffic advisories that are issued. They have asked people to avoid staying in vulnerable structures. Farmers have been advised to provide mulch at the base of the crops to prevent soil and root damage. Moreover, they should avoid working in the fields during thunderstorm/lightning. They have advised people to take shelter during thunderstorm and lightning. Lastly, they have asked people to stay updated.
