Scientists rediscover Himalayan pangolin species overlooked since 1836

Brian Hodgson described a new pangolin species in Nepal during 1836. Modern genetic analysis of smuggled scales revealed a distinct lineage. This lineage matched Hodgson's forgotten description, confirming a separate species. Scientists have now officially recognized the Himalayan pangolin, Manis aurita. This discovery highlights the importance of historical observations and modern science.
